INTRODUCTION (Legislative advances in plastic packaging)

The discovery of plastic initially targeted in giving solution to everyday needs of modern people, to improve the circulation of goods, as well as to saving energy resources. However, the modern-day trends with the pollutants adding up exponentially led to environmental deadlock, making more than urgent the need to implement measures for the protection of the environment but also the compliance of every citizen with a more prudent and smart use of plastic packaging.

The European Union, in an attempt to boost the awareness of its member states, commenced in 2015 studies in relation to plastic and circular economy, reaching gradually to the enactment of the communal guidelines voted in June with protocol number 2019/904. ★ Directive (EU) 2019/904 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.

In order to better inform both the public and our partners, it is our unbound duty to notify about the new facts, with a view to ensuring a smooth adjustment and compliance with the forthcoming data.

The rigorous EU directive on specific disposable plastics aims to move to more innovative, sustainable business models.

The Directive ( Community Directive of the European Union)

Member States shall put into effect the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this Directive by 3rd July 2021.

By way of indication, according to certain elements of the new Directive, Member States prohibit the placing on the market of disposable plastic products such as, cotton buds, cutlery, knives, straws, expanded polystyrene beverage containers including their caps and wrappings, expanded polystyrene cups their caps and lids e.t.c along with products made of degradable plastic material.

By 3rd July 2021, Member States shall ensure that plastic disposable beverage containers with a capacity of up to three liters as well as composite beverage packages including lids and covers carry lids and covers made of plastic can only be marketed if the lids and covers remain attached to the containers during the intended stage of use of the product.

According to the latest data from the European Commission, over 60% of plastic waste still comes from packaging, but only 40% of these packages are recycled.  Most of the raw materials are based on fossil fuels.

Therefore, if current production trends continue by 2050 plastics will be responsible for 20% of oil consumption accounts for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions, while plastic at sea is likely to exceed fish. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint of the industry, this will reduce plastic and marine waste while slowing the rapid spread of microplastics.
